Start with a Source
Go to a museum, zoo, farm, wildlife site, aquarium, yacht marina, shopping centre, factory or workshop – any interesting place – and spend time there, looking with a sketchbook and camera. Most of all use them. This doesn’t even require a special trip. With the same objective in mind, look around with a sculptor’s eye on the way to the supermarket or to work. Art can be a part of everyday life. Don’t necessarily look for ready-made sculpture ideas, simply seek out, note and record what interests you.
Having recorded a number of things, and perhaps a day or two later, look afresh at the images you have collected and consider them as the beginnings of possible sculptures. Ask yourself why you recorded a particular image. It is important to allow yourself to respond emotionally. If you are drawn to particular images or subject matter – go with the flow.
Take a Chance
Serendipity – being open to making chance discoveries – is important when looking for scrap metal, and in many respects is more reliable than visiting a scrapyard to hunt for particular pieces, and probably not finding them. Seeing what turns up and reacting to it can offer a useful and immediate starting point and is perhaps the most direct way of initiating a project. Let the scrap metal suggest the ideas. It may be the cast-iron foot of a bath, which looks like the plump body of a bird, or a nameless but intriguing object that catches your eye, even if initially you have no idea how to use it. It is enough if it sparks your interest. If you like it, or are intrigued by it, take it back to the studio or workshop where you can decide why you like it and what it might lead to.
